Internet-Famous Pallas’s Cat Zelenogorsk Passes Away at 14

He lived nearly twice as long as most of his species — and left behind an extraordinary legacy.

A Wild Soul Who Became a Global Star

Zelenogorsk resided at Novosibirsk Zoo in Russia, where he became one of the most recognizable Pallas’s cats on the internet.

His quiet fame began with a simple yet unforgettable moment: a video of him tucking his paws into his thick tail during winter. The clip, shared by the YouTube channel Manulization (Pallas’s Cats), captured hearts around the world and gained more than 14 million views.

No tricks.
No staging.
Just a wild cat staying warm.

And somehow, that was enough.

Born Free, Remembered Forever

Zelenogorsk was born in the wild in the Republic of Tuva. His early life remains largely unknown, including the identity of his parents.

He was first housed at Zelenogorsk Zoo, where he received his name — meaning “green mountain.” In 2014, he moved to the Novosibirsk Zoo, which would become his long-term home.

Despite living in human care, he never lost his wild spirit. His thick fur, round face, and steady gaze reflected the untamed landscapes his species comes from.

A Remarkable Legacy

Pallas’s cats — also known locally as manuls — are elusive predators with dense coats built for harsh climates. In the wild, they typically live between six and nine years. Even in captivity, reaching 11 or 12 years is considered exceptional.

Zelenogorsk reached 14.

Over his lifetime, he fathered more than 35 kittens with seven different mates. His offspring contribute to conservation breeding efforts that help maintain genetic diversity for the species.

But beyond numbers, he gave something else to the world:

Connection.

Through a short viral video, millions discovered the quiet charm of a rarely seen wild cat. For many, he was their first introduction to the manul — a species both fierce and fragile.

Zelenogorsk did not perform.

He simply existed.

And in doing so, he reminded people that even the smallest, quietest lives can leave a powerful mark.

From the snowy landscapes of Tuva to screens across the globe, his journey was unexpected and beautiful.

Rest well, green mountain. 🐾
