She Could Barely Move When Rescuers Found Her — 90 Days Later, Abby’s Recovery Took an Incredible Turn

For most cats, standing up, walking across a room, or grooming their own fur are ordinary parts of daily life. For Abby, a three-year-old stray found in Ryazan, Russia, those simple movements became victories worth celebrating.

When rescuers discovered her on May 18, she was in an alarming condition. According to her caregivers, Abby had reportedly spent several days outdoors suffering from severe burns. Her tiny body was extremely weak and dehydrated. She could barely move and was unable to eat on her own. Without urgent medical attention, her chances of survival appeared uncertain.

Her rescuers knew she needed more specialized care than they could provide locally. They arranged for her to be transported to a veterinary hospital in Moscow, determined to give her every possible opportunity to recover.

A Long and Difficult Road to Recovery

At the hospital, Abby began receiving intensive treatment. Veterinarians worked to care for her extensive wounds, remove damaged tissue, manage her pain, and provide fluids and nutritional support. Her condition required close monitoring, as her body was trying to recover from serious injuries while struggling with weakness and dehydration.

Eating was another major challenge. Abby initially could not consume enough food independently, so a feeding tube was used to help deliver the calories and nutrients she needed. It was an important part of keeping her body supported during a period when even basic functions were difficult.

Progress came slowly, but there were encouraging signs. Abby gained approximately 280 grams, and she eventually managed to lie comfortably on her stomach. Then, one moment brought a new sense of hope to everyone caring for her: she stood on her own feet.

It may have looked like a small movement to someone unfamiliar with her story, but for Abby, it represented a major step forward after days of being almost unable to move.

An Unexpected Medical Setback

Just as her recovery seemed to be moving in a positive direction, Abby faced another frightening challenge.

On Day 27, she suddenly stopped eating and began having difficulty maintaining her body temperature. Her rescuers reported that blood tests raised concerns about a potentially serious infection. The change in her condition required immediate attention, and she was returned to intensive care.

Her treatment reportedly included a blood transfusion, albumin, antibiotics, and additional supportive care. Once again, her survival depended on careful veterinary monitoring and prompt intervention.

It was an especially difficult moment for those who had watched her make such hard-won progress. After everything she had endured, the possibility of losing her to another medical complication was heartbreaking.

Fortunately, Abby pulled through.

By Day 32, her condition had stabilized enough for her to leave the hospital. She was able to continue her recovery in the safer, more comfortable surroundings of a caregiver’s home, where she could receive ongoing attention without the stress of another hospital stay.

Rediscovering the Little Things

Away from the hospital, Abby gradually began showing more signs of returning to everyday life.

One of the most meaningful changes was that she started grooming herself again. For cats, grooming is a natural behavior, but after such a serious ordeal, seeing Abby take care of her own fur was an encouraging sign.

She also began eating independently, no longer relying entirely on assisted feeding. From her place indoors, she quietly watched the world outside through a window. These were simple moments, yet they showed how far she had come from the helpless condition in which rescuers first found her.

Her progress continued over the following weeks, although healing was not complete. Her wounds still needed attention, and she remained under care.

By approximately Day 90, Abby had made remarkable improvements. She could stand, move more comfortably, groom herself, and eat without assistance. The changes were significant, especially considering how weak and immobile she had been at the beginning of her journey.

There was still work ahead, and her rescuers had not announced an official adoption. For now, the most important thing was that Abby had a safe place to continue healing, surrounded by people committed to her well-being.

Every Small Step Was a Victory

Abby’s story is not simply about surviving severe injuries. It is also about the patience and consistent care required to help a vulnerable animal regain parts of her everyday life.

Her recovery was not a straight line. There were encouraging milestones, a frightening medical setback, and many days when progress could only be measured in small changes. But with veterinary treatment and dedicated caregiving, Abby gradually regained abilities that once seemed far out of reach.

She still has wounds to heal, and her journey is not over. Yet the cat who once struggled to move can now stand, eat independently, and groom herself again.

Sometimes, recovery is not measured by how quickly an animal returns to normal. It is measured by the little things she can do today that she could not do yesterday. For Abby, every one of those steps is a reason to keep hoping.
