The tiny kitten was lying beneath a car, surrounded by rainwater, trembling and crying for help. She appeared to have been hit by a vehicle, and with her little body barely able to move, escaping the cold was impossible. Every passing moment left her vulnerable to the relentless rain.
When a friend discovered her, he immediately realized that she needed help. Unfortunately, he had neither a carrier nor a vehicle to transport the injured kitten to safety. He could not provide the urgent care she appeared to need on his own, so he reached out to someone who might be able to help.

That call changed everything.
Although the rescuer was at work when the message arrived, there was no question about what needed to happen next. The kitten could not be left lying in the water, especially when she might have suffered serious fractures. The rescuer went to get her and rushed her to a veterinary clinic.
By the time they arrived, the little cat was in critical condition.
A Race to Warm Her Fragile Little Body
The kitten had reportedly spent an hour or longer exposed to the rain and sitting in cold water. Her body was shaking uncontrollably, and the veterinary team found that she was suffering from hypothermia.
For a kitten so small, prolonged exposure to cold can be particularly dangerous. Hypothermia can interfere with normal body functions, and severely affected animals may need careful warming and close monitoring before other treatments can safely proceed.

The veterinary team placed her in an incubator to help restore her body temperature and stabilize her condition. The rescuer watched anxiously as the little kitten received the care she needed, hoping that the trembling would stop and her fragile body would begin to recover.
Once she had started warming up and her condition had improved, the plan was to provide additional treatment, including intravenous fluids if needed.
Gradually, the shaking subsided. Her temperature rose to 37.3°C, an encouraging sign that she was responding to the initial care, although she still required close observation and further examination.
For the person who had rushed her to the clinic, seeing even this small improvement brought enormous relief. Just hours earlier, May had been lying helplessly in the rain. Now, she was warm, being monitored, and finally receiving the attention she desperately needed.
The X-Rays Revealed Two Serious Injuries
After May’s condition had stabilized sufficiently, she was able to continue her recovery outside the immediate emergency setting. The rescuer took her home for close observation, with plans to return to the veterinarian for X-rays the following day.
The examination confirmed that May had suffered serious orthopedic injuries. She had a fracture of the humerus, the bone in the upper front leg, as well as an injury described by the veterinary team as sacroiliac desmorrhexis, involving the supporting ligaments around the connection between the pelvis and the sacrum.

These injuries help explain why the little kitten had been unable to move normally when she was found. Fractures and damage to the structures supporting the pelvis can cause considerable pain and make standing or walking difficult.
May would need more than rest and a warm place to sleep. Her injuries required surgical treatment to give her the best possible chance of recovering mobility.
Despite everything she had endured, there was one encouraging development: May was no longer trembling from the cold, and she had begun to settle down. Her rescuers could see that she was more comfortable, and her eyes seemed to reflect the relief of finally being somewhere safe.
They named her May, a small name for a tiny kitten who had already fought through a frightening ordeal.
May’s Surgery Was a Success
The following steps were crucial. With the veterinary team preparing to repair her injuries, May underwent surgery that afternoon.
Everyone involved had reason to be nervous. Orthopedic surgery in a young kitten requires careful planning, and the outcome depends on the nature of the injuries, the treatment performed, and the healing process that follows.
Thankfully, the surgery was reported to have gone successfully.

May began recovering, and soon there was another welcome sign of progress: she was eating again.
After the cold, pain, and stress of her rescue, her willingness to eat was an encouraging milestone. It did not mean that her recovery was complete, but it showed that she was beginning to settle into life beyond the emergency.
The little kitten who had once been trapped beneath a car was now preparing to return home with her rescuer. Instead of lying in rainwater, she could rest in a warm, protected space while her body began the slow process of healing.
A Long Road Ahead, but May Is No Longer Alone
May’s rescue was only the beginning of her journey. Following surgery, she would need time, appropriate pain management, follow-up veterinary examinations, and carefully controlled activity. Her recovery would depend on how well her injuries healed and how closely her rehabilitation plan was followed.
With patience and appropriate exercises recommended by her veterinarian, the hope was that May would gradually regain strength and mobility.
No one could undo what had happened to her beneath that car. But the people who stepped in gave her something that might otherwise have been lost: the opportunity to heal.

Her story also highlights how important it is to respond quickly when an injured animal is found outdoors. A kitten that is wet, cold, shaking, or unable to stand may be experiencing a medical emergency. Keeping the animal protected from further exposure and arranging prompt veterinary care can make a critical difference.
May was fortunate that someone noticed her cries, that her rescuer responded despite being at work, and that the veterinary team could stabilize her and treat her injuries.
She still had healing to do, but she no longer had to face it in the cold and rain.
Sometimes, a rescue does not begin with a dramatic moment. It begins with a message from a worried friend, a decision to stop what you are doing, and the simple refusal to leave a helpless animal behind.
For May, that decision meant the difference between being abandoned beneath a car and having a chance at a safe, loving future. ❤️
