Something strange had been happening at a minimarket in Indonesia. Fish and chicken products were repeatedly disappearing from the shelves, leaving the staff wondering how the food could vanish without anyone noticing. At first, the mystery was simply an amusing inconvenience, but after it happened often enough, the employees decided it was time to investigate.
The answer turned out to be much more entertaining than anyone expected.
After checking the store’s security cameras, the staff discovered that their unlikely thief was not a customer at all. It was a calico cat, recognizable by her beautiful three-colored coat and, perhaps most amusingly, by an innocent-looking face that gave absolutely no impression of someone capable of stealing anything.
Yet the cameras had made the evidence difficult to dispute. Whenever an opportunity appeared, the cat apparently helped herself to fish and chicken, taking advantage of the store as though it were her personal pantry. From the perspective of animal behavior, this was hardly surprising. Cats are opportunistic hunters and scavengers, and the strong smell of meat can be particularly attractive to an animal that is hungry or accustomed to finding food wherever it can.
Instead of becoming angry, however, the minimarket employees decided to handle the situation with a remarkable sense of humor.
They created a mock “WANTED” poster featuring a photograph of the feline suspect and placed it where customers could easily see it. The message was playful rather than threatening, turning what had been a minor store problem into a funny story that anyone walking through the shop could appreciate.
The poster featured the cat’s unmistakable face, effectively transforming her into the minimarket’s most notorious little criminal. Customers could now look at the photograph and, perhaps, keep a closer eye on their chicken and fish whenever they happened to be shopping nearby.
But the funniest part of the story had not happened yet.
Only minutes after the poster was put up, someone discovered the very same cat peacefully sleeping just a few meters away. There was no attempt to hide, no hurried escape, and certainly no sign that she understood she had just been publicly identified as the store’s “most wanted” suspect.
She simply curled up and went to sleep.
The timing made the scene almost impossible not to laugh at. There she was, resting comfortably near her own wanted poster as if the accusations had nothing whatsoever to do with her. If she had been caught trying to sneak away, the story would have been funny enough, but her complete lack of concern made it even better.
From a cat’s perspective, the situation probably made perfect sense. Cats do not understand human ideas of guilt, embarrassment, or being “wanted” for a crime. If the environment feels safe and there is a comfortable place to rest, a cat is perfectly capable of settling down without worrying about what humans think of its recent behavior.
And perhaps that was exactly what made this particular feline so entertaining.
She had apparently discovered a reliable source of delicious food, gained a reputation among the shop staff, been featured on her own wanted poster, and then calmly returned to the same area for a nap. There was no drama at all from her side of the story.
For the people who witnessed the moment, however, it became a memory worth sharing. The photograph of the apparently guilty cat sleeping beside her own poster captured something that many cat owners will instantly recognize: cats have an extraordinary ability to behave as though the entire world revolves around them.
Whether she was genuinely hungry, simply attracted by the smell of fresh meat, or had learned that the minimarket was an easy place to find food, one thing was clear—she had certainly made herself memorable.
The employees could have treated the situation as nothing more than a nuisance, but their decision to respond with humor turned an ordinary case of missing food into a delightful little story. Instead of a confrontation, the cat received something far more appropriate for her personality: a tongue-in-cheek reputation as the minimarket’s resident “criminal.”
And judging by the way she slept beside her own wanted poster, she may have been the least worried suspect in Indonesia.
If there was ever a cat who understood how to make an entrance, steal a snack, and then sleep through the consequences, this calico may have mastered it perfectly. Perhaps, in her mind, she was never a thief at all—just a very confident customer who knew exactly what she wanted and had no intention of apologizing for it.
